Research

My research aims on turning commercial Forests into a Progeny Trials where we aim to link genetics with harvesting data. The vision is to get a full scale sysem for producing high level data for all trees harvested, including genetic information as wekk as morphological data. Current forest operations generates extensive datasets on tree morphology, spatial distribution, and processing characteristics, yet these systems remain largely unintegrated and disconnected from genetic information. The project addresses this critical disconnect by developing methodologies to sample DNA during harvest, reconstruct genetic pedigrees, and fuse genetic data with operational and environmental datasets. In doing so, the project lays the foundation for a transformative approach to forestry that enables data-driven decision-making at the level of individual trees. This innovation holds significant potential to enhance tree breeding substantially, with benefits expanding to improved forest growth, yield and quality, ensuring more targeted conservation of genetic diversity, and improving the adaptability and resilience of future forests, thus directly contributing to long-term sustainability and biodiversity goals.
