Presentation

As a senior lecturer in horticulture, with an emphasis on systems biology within horticultural value networks, my academic contributions are focused on environmentally sustainable production systems in horticulture. My research spans from farm to fork, involving the microbiome of seeds and soil to issues with human pathogens in the phyllosphere of leafy greens, and encompasses soil, plant, and human health. My expertise in microbiological methods connected to plant production systems has been acquired through working in a wide range of projects involving: food safety issues connected to irrigation water and leafy green produce, biological control agents and their efficiency connected to use of specific light wavelengths, organic production of vegetables in greenhouses and implications on soil health, presence of antibiotic resistance genes in organic fertilizers, microbiological potential of growing media constituents, biological soil health parameters in organic
production systems, and postharvest quality of yellow onions.

My current research focus is investigating the effects of crop rotations on soil microbial community composition and microbial activity in organic greenhouse production, and issues connected to human pathogens in growing media for horticultural production.

Teaching

I teach primarily at the Horticultural Science program and the Horticultural management program, but also within the Agroecology and the Agricultural and Rural management programmes. I'm currently the programme study director for the Horticultural Science master program where I work with program development, quality assurance, progression, and student support.

I’m the course organizer for Microbial Horticulture (15 hp) and Hydroponic Systems in Horticultural Production and Public Environment (15 hp).
