Presentation
Veterinarian since 2008, educated at SLU in Uppsala. Then worked for just over ten years as a clinician in private small animal healthcare. Returned to SLU in 2020 for a teaching position at the Veterinary Nursing Program. PhD student since 2024 in a project on the simulation of laparoscopic surgery on dogs.
Research
Laparoscopic surgery is beneficial for the patient with a shorter recovery time, reduced need for painkillers and fewer postoperative complications. But it requires different skills from the surgeon compared to traditional open surgery. Skills that can be advantageously trained in a simulated environment without any risks for a real patient and with reduced stress for the surgeon.
With funding from the Greater Stockholm Veterinary Care Foundation, surgeons at SLU, in collaboration with the company Surgical Science, have developed a VR simulation of laparoscopic ovariectomy on a bitch.
The PhD project, which focuses on laparoscopic simulation training on dogs, consists of several parts. Initially, a validation study will be conducted to assess the newly developed VR simulation's ability to evaluate the laparoscopic competence of veterinary surgeons performing canine ovariectomies. The next study will investigate the prevalence and training strategies regarding laparoscopic surgery in dogs in the Scandinavian countries.
