Helle Skånes

Environmental Assessment Specialist, Biotope Monitoring,
Helle Skånes is a physical geographer with a background in Biology-Earth Sciences (BioGeo), sharing her time between two universities on a permanent basis, Stockholm University (75%), and SLU (25%). All to enjoy working with air-photo interpretation and landscape monitoring.

Presentation

I work as an environmental assessment specialist in the unit for Biotope Monitoring here at SLU, and also as a senior lecturer in Ecological Geography at the Department of Physical Geography, Stockholm University. My principal research interest is within the dynamic interface between physical geography, human geography, and ecology - using remote sensing techniques, especially digital aerial photos, GIS and cartography.

At SLU I am working with Anders Glimskär's team biotope monitoring (naturtypsövervakning). My role is to contribute to the unit's work, both practical air-photo interpretation, but also in developing techniques, optimal working flows, and data handling in the unit.

Research

I work preferably in close collaboration with applications aimed for planning and implementations in society and my larger-than-live project is creating the methodology of BIOTOP SE (currently in Swedish only), a regional biotope database as tool for municipalities and the county administration.

I have also participated in many of the national mapping and monitoring projects in Sweden, such as: Ängs- och hagmarksinventeringen, LiM (livsmedelspolitikens miljöeffekter), Natura2000 Basinventering, etc.
