Research

My research concerns societal transformations, how they occur, what and who drives them, and how they affect people. I have focused my studies primarily on the agrarian revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries, but I am also interested in early modern developments from the 17th century, as well as how people in rural areas experienced and were part of the industrial revolution of the late 19th century.

My research has been funded through a number of projects financed by, among others, the Swedish Research Council (VR), the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation, Handelsbanken's research foundations, the Spanish and French governments, European funds through COST, and several Swedish private foundations.

I am currently leading the research project Micro meets macro – a Swedish village during the agrarian and industrial revolution (VR) and am a member of the projects Mill Capacity and Mill Monopoly in Early Modern Sweden, 1625-1825 (VR) and Who Lived Where? – Spatial Perspectives on the Distribution of Wealth in Stockholm in 1715 (Brandförsäkringsverket).

Teaching

I have taught for over 30 years at all levels, from undergraduate to master's level and for doctoral students. In addition to being course coordinator for a number of courses, I have also developed my own courses. I have also written two teaching cases that I have used in my teaching: Early Industry and Regional Specialisation and The Merchants in Venice.

I am currently the course coordinator and teacher for the master's course 20th Century Agricultural Economy and Politics. In addition, I give occasional lectures on other courses in agricultural history, and in recent years I have also given an introductory lecture on agricultural history for new agronomy students.
