Internship abroad

Page reviewed:  26/05/2025

As an SLU student, you can do an internship abroad as part of your programme or independent courses. It’s a great way to apply your studies, gain insight into working life, improve your language skills and experience living in another country.

The Erasmus+ program

Through the Erasmus+ program, you can receive a grant to do an internship at a company, organization, or a university in any other EU country. You can also use the grant to finance going abroad in order to collect data/do research for an independent project, which will lead to a bachelor, magister or master thesis. The minimum duration for an Erasmus+ internship is 60 days, and the maximum duration is up to 360 days. During the period of your internship you need to live in the country in question.

Checklists

Below you can read more about the different kinds of internships and the different steps you need to follow. Even if an internship is not included in your study programme, you can add an international dimension to your studies by doing an internship abroad outside your study programme.

The internship should be carried out in a continuous period at a company, an organization, or an institution.  The internship should be full-time and must be between 2-12 months, and must be able to have the credits transferred to your academic records at SLU. You can be granted a maximum of 6 months at a time, the number of months you can receive a scholarship for depends on available funds and competition.

To be approved for the grant, you must:

  • Be registered with the intention of completing a degree at SLU
  • Take the responsibility for finding your own internship placement which your course leader must approve
  • Complete a language proficiency test before and after your internship
  • Live in the country of your internship during the entire internship period
  • NOT receive any other scholarships from the EU or UHR during the same mobility period
  • After the internship has been completed, you must complete a survey of participation and submit a brief participant report that other students can read
  • Submit a certificate from your internship host that you have completed the entire period of your internship

Please note that you may be liable to repay a portion or the entire grant if you do not comply with the aforementioned clauses.
