Doctoral subject areas

Page reviewed:  24/06/2025

As a doctoral student, you are admitted to a specific doctoral subject, and your education must follow the general syllabus for that subject. SLU offers around twenty different doctoral subjects across its four faculties.

This page presents the current doctoral subjects available at the faculties—those to which new doctoral students can be admitted, as well as those that may be selected when applying for the title of docent. Some subjects are offered by only one faculty, while others are shared across several faculties.

General syllabuses

Each doctoral subject has a general syllabus. The general syllabus (ASP) is an official document for each doctoral subject. It outlines how the doctoral education is to be structured within that specific subject. If you're curious about the general syllabus for a specific subject, you can find these on the staff website's page for Current doctoral education subjects.
