Anna Karlsson

Anna Karlsson
PhD student. My focus area is within forest planning and advisory services.

Presentation

I am a PhD student in the forest policy and planning group, my research focuses on forest management planning in Sweden. I aim to integrate a landscape perspective into existing practices by reframing the routines of forest planning, specifically focusing on forest planners and forest management plans. Subsequently, I will seek a constructive approach to balance owners´ managerial priorities at the estate level with nurturing their interest in contributing to the enhancement of environmental and social values on a landscape scale. My research is application-oriented, dealing with specific estates and landscapes in southern Sweden.

My research concerns topics i.e., Forest management planning, Swedish forest governance/policy, landscape perspectives, advisory services, forest owner association, routines of forest planners (social and technical aspects), knowledge management, organisational structure, and forest owner perspective.

Research

Project: "Co-Creating forest management plans for better accommodation of owner needs and landscape perspective". The Co-Creators project is designed to instigate lasting changes in forest management practices and involves knowledge co-creation among scientists, private forest owners, planners, and advisors.

Cooperation

The Co-Creators project is strongly oriented toward practical application and involves the co-creation of knowledge between science and practice. It includes collaboration with significant forest organisations, including Södra and the Swedish Forest Agency.

Background

I have a background in forestry and environmental science. I completed my bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science at Malmö University in 2018. Then, I took a one-year master´s program in Sustainable leadership and organisation, also at Malmö University. After a few years in academia, I decided to travel to Peru and work as a volunteer in the rainforest, there I realised my passion for environmental and forest conservation, motivating me to contribute more to the causes. Consequently, I enrolled in the Euroforester master’s program at SLU and graduated in 2022.

My master’s thesis involved a collaborative process for planning and implementing a green infrastructure plan in the county of Scania, Sweden. The thesis provides insights into decision-making practices at a sub-national level, revealing inadequate design of the collaborative process to plan and implement green infrastructure and a landscape perspective.
