Uppsala Health Summit (UHS) 2023 (24–25 Oct.) is dedicated to one of the most pressing issues with regards to human and planetary health: chemical pollution. Under the title “Chemical Pollution and One Health: From reactivity to proactivity” scientists, policy-makers, and regulators and other key stakeholder will gather to discuss the critical next steps and how to speed up efforts.

After the UHS 2023, on 26 October, the Satellite Symposium on Chemical Pollution and One Health will take place, with some of the key invited speakers at the UHS. The symposium aims at further discuss the topic and the identified next steps at the summit.

The symposium is free of charge and open to all interested scientists from the natural/life sciences and social sciences, as well as other stakeholders. It is organized by Uppsala University, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, the Centre for Reproductive Biology in Uppsala (CRU), and CLL. The networking meeting was Monday morning 21/8 at Evolutionary Biology Center (EBC), Uppsala University and included interesting talks by the invited key note speaker Michael Skinner and early career CRU members as well as networking opportunities during the poster exhibition and lunch at Hassan’s restaurant EBC.

  • Date: 2023-08-21

Report

The meeting took place at EBC in the Zootis hall on 21st of August 2023. It started with a key note presentation given by Professor Michael Skinner from Center for Reproductive Biology, School of Biological Sciences Washington State University, Pullman WA. The subject of the talk was how environmental factors, by impacting an individual, can alter the health of future generations via epigenetic mechanisms. In the coffee break, there was a poster session.
Five of the ten posters were presented by PhD students, participating in a competition. The judges of the competition, professors Joëlle Rüegg (UU) and Göran Andersson (SLU), interviewed the contestants carefully. After the break, the first-authors of the two best peer-reviewed papers during 2021-2022, were awarded: Ida Hallberg and Emmanouil Tsakoumis. This was followed by presentations of the winning papers and five 6-min talks by PhD students.

The networking meeting was concluded with lunch at Hassan’s restaurant at EBC where the judges of the poster competition awarded the winner, Andrea Cediel Ulloa.

The scientific committee met after the lunch.

Full title: The effect of drugs and other chemicals on embryonic cardiac function in a rat model.

A CRU Webinar with invited speaker Assoc Prof Helen Ritchie.

Assoc Prof Helen Ritchie is an academic at The University of Sydney, Australia, where she teaches anatomy. Her research is in the field of Teratology where she uses in vitro and in vivo methods to explore the role of hypoxia as a cause of adverse developmental outcomes.

Webinar summary: Slowing embryonic heart rate has been associated with embryonic death and malformations. We use two methods to identify potential cardiotoxic agents (i) whole rat embryo culture and (ii) high speed ultrasonography of pregnant rats. In this webinar, I introduce these methods and show some of our results.

Prof Sezgin Gunes is an academic at Ondokuz Mayis University, Turkiye, where she teaches medical biology and genetics. Her research interests are genetic and epigenetic mechanisms underlying common human diseases, especially male infertility and urological malignancies.

Seminar summary: Toxic exposures have various effects, including intrauterine growth retardation, developmental disruption, congenital defects, miscarriages, fetal death, and infertility. This seminar will introduce the mechanisms of teratogenesis and how toxic agents cause developmental disruption in mammals and humans. Risk assessment principles and practices associated with health risks will be discussed.
