Page reviewed:  16/05/2025

The Forum for the Digitalization of Urban Landscapes is a meeting place for inspiration and dialogue between academia and practice, where the impact of digitalization on the planning, design and management of urban landscapes is explored.

The forum offers a platform for employees at SLU Landscape to develop new approaches to this societal transition, as well as to formulate current research questions and integrate new perspectives in teaching.

The overall aim of the Forum for Urban Digital Landscapes is to:

  • Create conditions for broad dialogue and collaborations around the digitalization of urban landscapes
  • Increase awareness of and knowledge about digitalization
  • Market SLU Landscape externally as a knowledge hub in Sweden for issues related to digitalization and urban landscapes.

The digitalization of urban landscapes is in full swing at both a global and national level, and affects landscape planning, design and management in many ways. Examples of this include automated decision-making in the public sector, the use of digital twins, generative design, data-driven tools for park management, and collaboration with new, platform-based tech companies and service providers.

The development is characterized by both continuity, such as GIS and computer-based decision support systems, and change, where smart cities and new technologies play an increasingly important role.

The rapid digital development gives rise to a number of important questions, especially when it comes to how these changes affect the fundamental conditions for landscape planning, design and management. A central aspect is how digitalization is reshaping professions and organizations in the field, and what new challenges and opportunities this brings.
