About us
Plant Biology is part of BioCenter, a modern research facility on the Ultuna campus in Uppsala. The department is home to nearly 100 researchers, postdoctoral fellows, doctoral students, and technical and administrative staff.
Research
The Department of Plant Biology is at the forefront of innovative research on plants and their interactions with the environment. Our work bridges fundamental science and practical applications, with the aim of advancing sustainable agriculture and forestry in a rapidly changing world.
Education
We offer world-class education in plant sciences and organizes and teaches a wide range of basic and advanced biology courses at both undergraduate and PhD levels within SLU's educational programs.

Charles Melnyk awarded Rising Stars in Plant Sciences 2025
Charles Melnyk, Professor of Plant Physiology at the Department of Plant Biology, and grafting expert at SLU, has been selected as one of five winners of the "Rising Stars in Plant Sciences Award" 2025. The award is co-hosted annually by Molecular Plant and its sister journal, Plant Communications. -
Heal the wound or form roots? It depends on water availability
A torn tomato leaf that ends up on the ground sometimes develops roots from the wound, but other times it seals the wound with healing tissue. A study led from SLU now shows that water availability is the key factor that controls the fate of the leaf in the event of such damage. -
How “double-genomes” help plants diversify - and what that means for crops and climate resilience
A new study led by scientists at SLU, Uppsala and Charles University, Prague, just published in the leading journal PNAS, sheds light on a powerful but little-understood force in evolution: whole-genome duplication, a rare event where an organism gains an extra full set of chromosomes. -
Breeding 360: Cross-disciplinary collaboration in focus
On May 6–7, the SLU Breeding Network held its meeting titled Breeding 360: Collaboration across disciplines at Campus Ultuna.
