Doctoral education

Page reviewed:  19/01/2026

Are you interested in developing fundamental knowledge of plant life and contributing to sustainable plant-based solutions? The Department of Plant Biology offers postgraduate education leading to a PhD degree within the broad field of Biology.

Our research is characterized by versatile and modern scientific approaches, including advanced genetic, biochemical, and cell biological methods combined with multi-omics techniques. Most PhD projects are externally funded and are therefore closely linked to specific research groups within the department. To learn more about our research activities, please take a look at our publication list and descriptions of our research groups (links).

The working environment at the Department of Plant Biology is highly international, and English is used as the primary working language. Typically, the department hosts 10–20 active PhD students.

Doctoral Degree Requirements

The general requirements for obtaining a Doctoral degree include 30 credits of doctoral-level coursework and a compilation thesis consisting of:

  • At least three scientific papers.
  • First or shared first authorship by the doctoral student on at least two of the papers.
  • At least one of the papers should be published or accepted for publication in an international peer-reviewed scientific journal.

Admissions, Courses, and Regulations

The nominal duration of PhD studies is four years. An extension of approximately 5–10% is common and usually reflects time devoted to additional activities, such as undergraduate teaching or PhD student council work.

Announcements of available PhD positions are published on the SLU vacancies page (link).

The general learning outcomes and objectives for doctoral education in Sweden are regulated by the Higher Education Ordinance (Universitets- och högskolerådet). A summary of these objectives can be found here.

PhD courses are mainly provided through SLU Research Schools, in particular the Research School in Organism Biology.

More detailed information on admission procedures, progress monitoring, and thesis defense is available on our internal web pages. For more information you can also contact the Director of Graduate Studies Anders Hafrén.
