Wildlife monitoring

The wildlife monitoring data from the Grimsö Research Station are used to evaluate census methods and to track species’ population dynamics. Researchers can use the resources and data at the station through SITES, a national infrastructure for field experimentation.

For a number of years at the Grimsö research area a large number of annual wildlife and habitat inventories are carried out. They comprise e.g. population estimates for elk and deer, vole-cycle dynamics, tick prevalence and the reproductive success for red fox and starling, where several data series are unique and were started as early as in the 1970s.

These types of longitudinal data series are sometimes crucial for understanding ecological issues or management problems.

These data are available to the public and other researchers by contacting Grimsö and several of the series are also published on the SITES portal.

Grimsö’s wildlife monitoring is part of the SITES research network (with support from the Research Council) comprising several field stations where different kinds of longitudinal data are being gathered in different climate and nature types. External researchers are welcome to all these stations to make use of the fields of research and infrastructure as well as availing of recommendations and support for field work.

Use SITES

SITES offers researchers the opportunity to use its network of field research stations. You will also find data on wildlife that we have collected over many years there.
