Energy supply and production

Page reviewed:  26/03/2026

Modern agriculture is a major consumer of energy, both directly in the form of e.g. fuel for vehicles, but also indirectly in the form of energy required to produce input goods such as e.g. fertilizer. But agriculture can also have an important role as a supplier of energy to the surrounding society. We study systems based on many different energy carriers such as e.g. biogas, liquid biofuels, electricity and hydrogen. Energy issues are also strongly linked to climate issues and the pursuit of fossil-free systems has long been a major part of our research.
