Food systems are complex structures that encompass the entire chain from production of raw materials to consumption of finished products and disposal of residues and waste. In order to improve food systems from various aspects, understanding their complexity, but also working to simplify and explain their function and interaction with external factors, is of crucial importance. The models are always designed with a specific application as a goal and to answer a specific type of question, for example how a specific system should be designed to limit its impact on the climate as much as possible. The models and their application can cover different geographical areas, up to a global scale.
