National Forest Attribute Maps

Page reviewed:  18/12/2025

National Forest Attribute Maps consist of a number of different map products that describe Sweden’s forests.

The maps are produced by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) through the joint processing of The Swedish Land Survey (Lantmäterie) laserdata and SLU’s National Forest Inventory field surveys. Forestry Base Data is openly available to everyone, making it possible for individual forest owners, for example, to obtain information on timber volume and tree heights on their own property.

In the various raster maps, each cell (10 × 10 meters) contains calculations of forest volume, basal area–weighted mean height, basal area, basal area–weighted mean diameter, and biomass. The first national laser scanning carried out by The Swedish Land Survey (Lantmäteriet) started in 2009 and was completed for all of Sweden in 2019. The second laser scanning of Sweden’s forests, referred to as round 2, began in 2018 and is expected to be completed during 2024. A map showing the production status can be found under the “Read More” section.

National Forest Attribute Maps (Skogliga grunddata) is a collaboration between SLU and the Swedish Forest Agency (Skogsstyrelsen) based on The Swedish Land Survey's (Lantmäteriet) laser scanning. SLU is responsible for producing the maps through forest estimations, and the Swedish Forest Agency’s (Lantmäteriet) role is to coordinate the project and make National Forest Attribute Maps available. See the Swedish Forest Agency’s (Skogsstyrelsen) map service here.

The development and updating of the National Forest Attribute Maps is a government assignment, partially funded by the forestry sector. The purpose of the assignment is to support increased production while promoting more efficient environmental management. Download geodata here.
