From blasted rock to new urban landscapes

How can artistic and design-based research help us imagine and shape more sustainable urban futures? Join us in this webinar for an exploration of transdisciplinary approaches to urban waterscapes, public space and ecological transformation.

Date: 27 May 2026

Time: 12:10 - 12:50

Language: English

Organiser: SLU Urban Futures

Location: Online

Hanna Erixon Aalto, Assistant Professor in Landscape Architecture and Design Theory at SLU, will present insights from the research project MASSA (2020–2024). The project explored how blasted rock generated by the expansion of Stockholm’s metro system could be transformed into reefs, islands, habitats and new public spaces.

  • How can artistic and design-based methods contribute to sustainable urban transformation?
  • What happens when ecological, artistic and spatial perspectives are brought together?
  • How can speculative and transdisciplinary approaches support future planning and decision-making?

This webinar is particularly relevant for researchers, planners, landscape architects, designers and practitioners working with urban sustainability, public space and ecological transformation.

Welcome to a discussion on speculative thinking, transdisciplinary collaboration and the future of urban landscapes.
