Future Scenarios for Dairy Production in Norrland

Page reviewed:  27/11/2025

A new scientific article has analysed the impact of various future scenarios for milk production in northern Sweden. The differences between the scenarios are considerable, and it is not clear which one is the most positive.

Swedish milk production plays an important role in producing nutrient-rich foods, but future efforts to improve its sustainability require structural changes.

The future scenario dominated by high-tech results in a lower carbon footprint per liter of milk, but increased carbon inflow to the region and reduced milk production. A future dominated by great care for ecosystems and local food systems is not really the best in any area, but neither is it the worst. The conclusion is that we must understand that compromises and priorities are necessary when discussing the food system of the future. This type of analysis, which creates a common playing field for such discussions, will then be very important.
