Degree awarded upon completion of the programme

The Master's (120 credits) programme Forest and Business Management leads to a degree of Master of Science (M.Sc.) with a major in Business Administration. A Degree of Master is a general qualification.

Students who fulfil the qualification requirements for a degree of Master (120 credits) in the main field of study will be issued a degree certificate on request. The degree certificate will specify the qualification as degree of Master of Science (M.Sc.) with a major in Business Administration.

The programme contains courses which, depending on choice of courses and combination with previous studies in forestry at first-cycle level at SLU, or following supplementary qualifications upon completion of the Master’s degree may enable students to fulfil the requirements for the professional qualification Degree of Master of Science in Forestry, 300 credits. The outcomes for a Degree of Master of Science in Forestry are stipulated in the Ordinance for the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. The requirements for a Degree of Master of Science in Forestry are defined in SLU’s system of qualifications.

Degree requirements

A Degree of Master of Science (M.Sc.) with a major in Business Administration is awarded to students who have successfully completed 120 credits, of which at least 90 credits are from second-cycle courses, from the required courses as follows:

  • a minimum of 30 credits with Business Administration as the main field of study (A1N, A1F)
  • a minimum of 30 credits from an independent project (degree project) with Business Adminstration as the main field of study (A2E).

Additionally, students must have successfully completed a Degree of Bachelor, a professional qualification comprising a minimum of 180 credits, or have an equivalent qualification from abroad.

The Degree of Master of Science (120 credits) may contain a maximum of 30 credits from first-cycle courses, provided these credits were not included in a Degree of Bachelor or its equivalent. All courses included in a degree must be at university level, have been successfully completed and may not overlap/have similar content.

Admission: There are two admission rounds for this Master's programme. The first admission round is open to all international applicants at www.universityadmissions.se. SLU strongly encourage all international students to apply in this first admission round.

During this programme, you will be trained in business administration to initiate, organise, and lead processes that aim to implement sustainability, circularity, and bioeconomy within the forestry sector.

In the initial year, you will gain in-depth knowledge of the global forest sector, business studies (including marketing and value chains), and some economics (markets and market functions). Additionally, you will learn about wood properties and innovations. The first year also includes a course in leadership in a changing world.

In the following years, you will deepen your knowledge of business administration, sustainability, sustainability reports, and research methods. The independent work - master thesis - gives you the opportunity to further immerse yourself in a specific subject by applying your knowledge, abilities, and approach within the main area.

You have the option to study courses outside the proposed schedule, at SLU or at other universities in Sweden or abroad. There are also good opportunities for exchange studies at one of SLU's partner universities worldwide.

Combining business studies and forest competences with a focus on sustainability and bioeconomy can create excellent job opportunities for individuals. There are opportunities in the forest sector such as consulting companies, forest industrial companies, forest companies, banking and insurance sectors, authorities, interest organisations, and certification companies. The programme also prepares students for postgraduate studies in business administration.

The programme includes courses that, depending on course selection and previous studies at the bachelor level, can fulfill the requirements for the professional forester's degree.
