Artportalen, The Swedish species observation system, is a system for recording and searching species observations in Sweden. There are a total of more than 100 million observations of various kinds of organisms in the Artportalen database. Authorities, researchers, nature conservationists and private persons both report observations and use the data, which are openly available at artportalen.se.
Species observations can be anything from occasional off-the-cuff findings and simple garden observations to results from systematically implemented inventories and research projects, which also include survey data (presence-absence information). Data from environmental monitoring are also ubiquitous in Artportalen, such as the results from large-scale inventories, local investigations and surveys of invasive alien species.
Much of the data in Artportalen are quality assured through expert verification of both species identification and place.
