Research focus

-Wildlife ecology and conservation

-Behavioural ecology

-Foraging strategies and food web dynamics

-Human conflicts with wildlife

My primary research is within the ecological role of fish predators and predator interactions with commercial and recreational fishery. My expertise is the identification and quantification of prey species. I have mostly worked with the diet of birds and mammals, but also fish predators. The research includes the use of multivariate techniques to relate spatial and temporal differences in diet to the structure and variations in fish communities and fishery catch.

Research also involves determining the distribution of the seal worm, also called cod worm, which cause problems for the fishery by their presence in the musculature, or files of fish. With an increasing seal population (the final host in which the parasite reproduce) there is concerns of an increase of the infestation rate in fish, especially the commercially important cod.

I have also been working with the behaviour of porpoises around fishing nets, with porpoise click loggers, to determine if they are attracted to the nets (fish in the net) or incidentally get caught in nets.
