Keynote at International Conference on Animal Health and Economics
Professor Helena Hansson from the Department of Economics was one of the keynote speakers at the international conference ISESSAH (International Society for Economics and Social Sciences of Animal Health).
In her keynote address on October 16, 2025, titled “Economic burden and multiple societal impacts of animal diseases”, Helena Hansson highlighted the role of animal welfare from an economic perspective.
The presentation focused on how economic models can help understand and address the societal challenges posed by animal diseases. Helena emphasized the importance of viewing animal health from a systems perspective, where the choice and use of data play a central role in measuring and evaluating animal welfare and societal benefits.
Several examples from ongoing projects within Helena’s research group were presented, offering concrete insights into current research. The presentation sparked great interest and engaged the audience in a lively discussion with many questions.
The ISESSAH conference annually brings together researchers, veterinarians, epidemiologists, and social scientists from around the world. Its aim is to strengthen collaboration between economics, social sciences, and veterinary medicine to better understand and improve animal health globally.
