BIOGEOMON 2026: Ecosystems in Transition
BIOGEOMON 2026 brought together almost 570 researchers from 32 countries in Umeå to explore ecosystems in transition. The conference legacy continues through the publication of its Conference Summary and Abstract Book, a highlights video and a tribute to BIOGEOMON’s origins in Prague.
This year, we had the honour and privilege of welcoming the BIOGEOMON community to SLU in Umeå for the 12th International BIOGEOMON Conference, Ecosystems in Transition, held on 8–11 June 2026. Co-chaired by Kevin Bishop and Hjalmar Laudon, some 570 colleagues from 32 countries came together, making this the largest edition of BIOGEOMON to date. We were truly overwhelmed by the energy and enthusiasm of the participants, and by their eagerness to share science, exchange knowledge, build collaborations and stay connected.
As we wrap up this year’s BIOGEOMON conference, we are pleased to share the Conference Summary and Abstract Book. It brings together the research presented in Umeå and captures the discussions and scientific exchange that made this year’s meeting special.

Forging New Connections and Renewing Old Ones
The theme Ecosystems in Transition brought together research on how terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems respond to environmental change. Across 20 interdisciplinary sessions, participants explored topics ranging from biogeochemistry and hydrology to forest health, peatlands and biodiversity. Field excursions to the Krycklan Catchment Study, Svartberget and Röbäcksdalen Research Stations (SITES research stations) connected these discussions with long-term ecosystem research in northern Sweden. Just as important were the conversations beyond the lecture halls: reconnecting with colleagues, meeting new people and sharing ideas. The enthusiasm of graduate students and early-career researchers added particular energy to the meeting, helping strengthen connections across generations of scientists.

Honouring BIOGEOMON’s Origins in Prague
As BIOGEOMON 2026 celebrates the success of this year’s conference, we look back to Prague, where the story began in 1987. We pay homage to the beautiful Art Nouveau Grégr Hall in the Municipal House, a place connected to BIOGEOMON’s early history. Nearly four decades on, we celebrate the heritage, collaboration and shared curiosity that continue to bring this scientific community together, as we look ahead to the next chapter of BIOGEOMON and the connections, discoveries, and collaborations still to come!
