Faraz Muneer

Researcher, Department of Plant Breeding
Researcher in plant protein quality, green biomass biorefining, and sustainable crop utilization, with a focus on linking genetics, processing, and functionality for food and biomaterial applications.

Presentation

I am a researcher at the Department of Plant Breeding, SLU Alnarp, working within the Plant Product Quality (PPQ) group. My work focuses on improving the value of plant-based proteins and agricultural biomass through molecular, functional, and processing-based approaches. I collaborate widely across Nordic, European, and international partners to advance sustainable food systems, circular bioeconomy solutions, and innovative uses of crops and residues.
My work combines protein chemistry, plant breeding, green biorefining, and value-chain development, with strong engagement in teaching, supervision, and capacity building.

Research

My research focuses on understanding and improving the quality, functionality, and valorization potential of plant-based raw materials, including legumes, cereals, and green biomass.
Key scientific areas include:

- Protein molecular profiling
- Functional properties
- Mild fractionation and green extraction technologies
- Biorefining of leaves and residues for proteins, fibers, peat-free media, and biofertilizers
- Protein structure–processing relationships
- Development of high-quality protein crops through integration with breeding and genomics
- Circular bioeconomy solutions for underutilized biomass
