Research

The open-cage systems in aquaculture production, while economically important, pose environmental risks to lake ecosystems due to their flow-through nature, which allows nutrients from fish farming to disperse directly into surrounding waters. My research investigates how microbial communities in oligotrophic (nutrient poor) regulated lakes respond to these nutrient inputs.

Microorganisms play a central role in nutrient cycling and respond rapidly to environmental change, making them valuable indicators of ecosystem disturbance. By studying these microbial responses, my work aims to deepen our understanding of the environmental impacts of open-cage aquaculture and provide a scientific basis for future management and sustainable development of open-cage aquaculture.
