Carola Wingren
Presentation
Carola Wingren is Professor of landscape architecture with a focus on professional practice and research by and through design. She takes on challenges where landscape design meets contemporary societal challenges linked to transition and climate adaptation: flooding issues, urban densification, multiculturalism and multifunctionality in urban spaces. Wingren has led and participated in several research projects for Formas, Vinnova, MSB and HERA-EU. She works mainly in an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary manner, collaborating in municipalities from Skåne in the south to Kiruna in the north. She often uses artistic methods or collaborates with artists to explore ideas and communicate with the local community. She has participated in a number of architectural juries over the years and most recently acted as an expert in ArkDes' collaboration with Ulricehamn Municipality in the project VERKET, which aims to use practical research to tackle modernism's centrally located, obsolete infrastructural structures in order to transform them into important central places in cities (in this case a sewage treatment plant). She cares about popular communication, and often uses exhibitions as a contact surface with the public when working with difficult issues such as climate threats or death. She has won The Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry 's prize for research communication in 2019.
