SEEC – Swedish Environmental Epidemiology Center

Updated: October 2025

The Swedish Environmental Epidemiology Center (SEEC) provides an accessible capacity for health-related environmental surveillance and research.

SEEC was established in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, with an initial focus on supporting immediate response. Since then, our mission has shifted toward building a long-term, sustainable national capacity hosted by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and supported by the Pandemic Laboratory Preparedness (PLP) program of SciLifeLab.

Our activities

Wastewater-based surveillance (WBS)

Our national wastewater surveillance program provides surveillance of key pathogens for more than 40% of the Swedish population. Our data is updated weekly (typically on Mondays) and presented on an interactive dahsboard. In addition, we provide sequencing data for the Public Health Agency of Sweden for SARS-CoV2 variant surveillance.

Wastewater sample repository

SEEC maintains an extensive biobank of wastewater samples collected since 2020 and stored at -20°C and -80°C that are avialible to researchers upon request.
