Short summary
BEAR (Biogas Efficiency in Arctic Regions) is an Interreg Aurora project aiming to improve biogas production in Arctic regions through smart process control, innovative substrates and microbiological research, strengthening sustainable energy solutions through cross-border collaboration.
BEAR focuses on improving biogas production by developing smart process control based on predictive models and advancing knowledge of the microbial communities that drive biogas production. Together, these efforts will help optimise process performance, increase energy efficiency, and reduce methane emissions.
The project combines the complementary expertise of its partners. The University of Oulu develops predictive models for smart process control, SLU contributes with microbiological research to improve reactor performance, LTU investigates novel substrates to enhance fermentation, and Luke provides energy-efficiency modelling supported by detailed chemical analyses. Digikierto Oy evaluates the economic impacts and supports practical implementation pathways.
The main target group is small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), including farms that operate biogas plants or are planning new investments. Publicly owned biogas plants will also benefit from the project results. The developed solutions are expected to improve efficiency and profitability while supporting the wider deployment of sustainable biogas technologies across the Interreg Aurora region.
