Short summary
Cross-Border Collaboration to Improve the Circular Biogas Economy.
In biogas production in the Northern Nordic region, the digestate left after anaerobic digestion is a byproduct that is costly for companies to dispose of. However, it contains valuable plant nutrients that could be returned to agriculture. Within the Boost Nordic Biogas project, we will test digestate and various digestate-derived products as fertilizers for agricultural crops in a three-year field trial. Preliminary plans include testing raw digestate, dewatered digestate, pelletized digestate, as well as digestate-based products such as biochar and ammonium sulfate. We will grow spring wheat, potatoes, and barley, and evaluate both yield and the nutritional and heavy metal content of the harvest.
