RESEARCH PROJECT

Forest based biofuels for Sustainable Arctic Marine Shipping

Updated: August 2025

Short summary

Shipping in the Arctic is consuming increasing amounts of fossil fuel, thereby impacting aquatic life, human health, and climate change. This project aims to identify a sustainable shipping fuel from Swedish pulp and paper mill biosludge.

Swedish pulp and paper mills generate biosludge that can be an environmental problem if not handled properly. Transforming biosludge to biofuel for shipping could address this problem at the same time as decreasing the consumption of fossil fuels.

Earlier studies don’t provide any firm conclusion on the potential impacts of biofuels for shipping. This project fills a knowledge gap by addressing environmental, social, and economic consequences of producing biofuels for Artic shipping.

The following areas will be investigated:

  • Environmental impacts of biofuel production from biosludge.
  • Cost-benefits of switching from fossil fuels to biofuel from biosludge.
  • Social impacts of producing biofuel in northern Sweden for shipping.

Results will provide support to policy-makers and decision-makers in the shipping sector, facilitating strategies for Arctic sustainability.
