Short summary
The EU-funded FORTUNA project identifies future research needs to help halve pesticide use and risk in line with the European Farm to Fork Strategy while supporting competitive, pesticide-free farming.
The FORTUNA project is a three-year EU-funded initiative launched in January 2024 to identify future research challenges linked to the European Farm to Fork (F2F) Strategy, which aims to reduce both the overall use and risk of chemical pesticides and the use of more hazardous pesticides by 50% by 2030.

FORTUNA explores biological, technological, and socio-economic approaches to support innovative, pesticide-free farming while maintaining the competitiveness of European agriculture. Its objectives include strengthening European networking and knowledge exchange, mapping innovations and challenges, identifying knowledge gaps and barriers to exceeding F2F targets, and defining future research needs for further reducing or phasing out chemical pesticides. The project is coordinated by the Julius Kuhn-Institut and involves 11 multidisciplinary partners from eight EU Member States and Switzerland.
