Short summary

Lameness and poor bone quality are major welfare problems in pig farming and are one of the most common reasons for the premature death of sows.

As a step to improve bone health, this project studies lameness and bone quality in sows by recording physical activity using accelerometer technology (activity monitors), their gait, static load and center of gravity using pressure measurement mat, as well as with conventional visual assessment of movement and leg position. These data will later be correlated to the genetic profile of the sows for future breeding actions.
