Short summary

How the sugar content in forage can be influenced by various production factors and by soaking.

Horses with insulin resistance and laminitis are recommended a diet low in water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC) for treatment purposes. The overall aim of the study was to identify a practical method for reducing the amount of WSC in pasture forage for horses and subsequently to study the metabolic response of glucose and insulin following the feeding of healthy horses with WSC-reduced feed.

The project was conducted in collaboration with the Department of Clinical Sciences, SLU Uppsala. Our part of the project included investigating how sugar content in feed can be affected by different production factors and soaking.

In year 1 (2010) a small scale experiment was carried out in a laboratory scale, and in year 2 (2011) a feed production experiment was conducted in connection with a feeding trial.
