Short summary

Good profitability is important for most dairy farmers. In this project, we investigate how different animal welfare levels affect farm economy and also possible implications at societal level, both in short and long term.

The Swedish Animal Welfare Act is, in some areas, stricter than current EU legislation. Some stakeholders believe that this can imply increased costs and not provide sufficient competitive advantage.

In this multidisciplinary project, focusing on dairy herds, we will assess costs and benefits associated with different animal welfare improving practices at farm level. We will also study how and which external effects that are affected by different animal welfare levels.

Additionally, this project will strengthen the link between animal science, veterinary medicine and economics
