Short summary

We are developing a new, bio-based value chain for renewable fuels and protein in Sweden, where field cress– a novel oilseed crop – takes center stage.

The project represents an important first step in developing a new, bio-based value chain for renewable fuels and protein in Sweden. Researchers at SLU are currently domesticating a native wild plant, field cress, into a robust oil crop tailored for the Nordic climate. Field cress exhibits excellent winter hardiness, drought tolerance, and a great yield potential.

The project aims to introduce a new crop to Swedish agriculture while enhancing the regional availability of renewable resources. By refining field cress through modern plant breeding methods, optimizing cultivation techniques, and designing a sustainable value chain to harness its potential, the project will yield positive impacts across sectors, including agriculture, energy, and transportation.

The project group comprises partners with expertise spanning the entire value chain, from genetics and chemistry to system analysis and product development, ensuring the project's progress. Besides SLU, project partners include Lund University, Sveriges Frö och Oljeväxtodlare, RISE, Skeby Gårdar, and Preem.

By producing renewable fatty acids for biofuels and proteins for food and feed, this project strengthens Swedish agriculture, reduces carbon footprints, and contributes to a greener future.
