Searching for seeds of field cress
Calling all nature enthusiasts and science lovers! We invite you to join our exciting citizen science project and contribute to the exploration and conservation of our natural world. By participating, you will embark on a thrilling journey of discovery.
How to join
Here's a simple guide on how to collect and submit mature seeds of field cress/fältkrassing (Lepidium campestre) to assist us in our research:
1. Locate field cress: use sightings published on www.inaturalist.org near your home to track down the plant. Alternatively, explore abandoned railroad tracks where it regularly thrives and compare photos at inaturalist.com or what is published on this site. Depending on your geographic location, seeds typically mature from June to August.
2. Sampling the mature seeds: The seeds are ready for harvest when the pods turn dry and yellowish. Preferably the stem should also be yellow but sometimes the seeds will shatter before that happen.
3.Careful collection: Once you've located suitable pods, place the seeds in a paper bag or a filter designed for coffee brewing.
4. Secure packaging: Tape the paper bag or filter carefully to keep the seeds contained. This step is crucial to ensure safe transportation.
5. Addressing and enveloping: Prepare an envelope, put in the seeds and your contact information (address and e-mail) and write the following address clearly:
Cecilia Hammenhag
Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences
Department of Plant Breeding
Växtskyddsvägen 1
234 56 Alnarp
Sweden
6. Stamping and sending: Affix a stamp to the envelope and send it to us. If you are located in Sweden, contact cecilia.hammenhag@slu to get a pre-paid envelope (stamp included).
