Short summary

Osteoarthritis (OA) in cats is a difficult-to-diagnose joint disease that leads to chronic pain and reduced mobility. The frequency increases with age and the symptoms are often mistaken for normal ageing.

The aim of this project is to improve the diagnosis and treatment of OA in cats, by developing a pain and quality of life questionnaire. In the pain and lifestyle questionnaire, the pet owner describes how well the cat performs daily activities. The questionnaire is a promising diagnostic tool for a difficult-to-study animal species.

The project compares the results of the pain and lifestyle questionnaire with those of other diagnostic methods, such as orthopedic examination, pressure measurement mat, whole body computed tomography and blood sample analysis.

The pressure mat objectively records the cat's gait and how the load is distributed across the paws. Through these recordings, we have been able to see how cats relieve their sore legs. The project also includes a clinical study comparing the efficacy of two analgesic drugs. The results of the project will lead to better animal health in cats through improved diagnosis and treatment of OA.
