Short summary

Machine learning to investigate the enigmatic genetics of equine microphthalmia.

Background

Foals in some popular family lines are born with the eye disease microphthalmia, which means that foals are born with a predisposition to - but not fully developed eyes. However, it is not clear how the disease is inherited.

About this project

In this project, researchers will use DNA analysis to identify the genetic causes of equine microphthalmia (EqMi), a disease in which the offspring of popular family lines are over-represented and where there is a need to better understand the inheritance pathway to avoid an increase in affected offspring in the future.

The aim of the research project is to improve the health of horses and create guidelines for breeding decisions that prevent an increased incidence of EqMi.
