Short summary

Restore-C develops tools and expertise to make the restoration of Sweden’s coastal and marine environments more strategic, effective, and sustainable.

Sweden's coastal and marine environments are in urgent need of restoration. Not a single marine habitat type in Sweden currently has favourable conservation status, and restoration efforts to date have been fragmented, geographically limited, and slow to deliver results. 

Restore-C develops tools and knowledge to support smarter, more effective planning of coastal marine restoration in Sweden. The project brings together ecological science, stakeholder perspectives, and spatial analysis to identify where and how restoration measures can deliver the greatest benefits – for nature, people, and the economy.

The project will develop key performance indicators to assess restoration measures across ecological, social, and economic dimensions, and produces hotspot maps showing where efforts would be most cost-effective. Healthy coastal ecosystems support biodiversity, fisheries, recreation, and climate resilience. By identifying where restoration delivers the most value, Restore-C helps direct limited resources where they matter most. The results will contribute to Sweden's obligations under the EU Nature Restoration Regulation.

A central deliverable is an online toolbox giving planners, managers, and other stakeholders guidance on which restoration methods are relevant and effective for their specific site and situation.
