Agricultural Field Research

Field research is a scientific method where data is collected under field conditions that are as close to practical application as possible. SLU has several research infrastructures within agricultural field research that are open for external use. Here, you can find information about the services and resources available.

Field research stations

SLU has four field research stations located in Umeå (Röbäcksdalen), Uppsala (Lövsta), Skara (Lanna), and Alnarp (Lönnstorp). The research stations are available for research within agronomy, soil science, ecology, environmental science, agroecology, and other subject areas. Researchers or research groups wishing to initiate new trials or conduct other experiments are welcome to contact the stations' staff.

Lövsta Field Research Station

SLU Lövsta Field Research Station runs about 100 agricultural field trials in the Uppsala area. Many of the trials are connected to research projects at SLU, but we also welcome assignments from other entities.

Lanna Research Station

At Lanna Research Station we perform field experiments and environmental monitoring for different universities and organisations.

Lönnstorp Research Station

Lönnstorp Research Station is dedicated to studies of cropping systems ecology, with a focus on the design, sustainable development and assessment of arable cropping systems, in conventional and organic farming.

Röbäcksdalen Field Research Station

At Röbäcksdalen Field Research Station, variety trials, long-term experiments in crop nutrition and crop rotation, and research projects—primarily focused on forage crops—are conducted. Many of the research assignments originate from SLU, but we also welcome assignments from other parties.

SLU Agricultural Long-Term Experiments

SLU operates and funds around 60 long-term agricultural experiments in many different subject areas. These trials are essential for investigating the gradual changes that occur in the soil due to different management practices, and for observing the effects of climate change on soil and crops. They also serve as a 'field laboratory' for research, as the long duration of varying management has created significant differences in the soil regarding factors such as nutrient content and pH.

Long-term Data Collection

There is an ongoing project to make data from the Agricultural Long-Term Experiments available via open access. You can find the data published so far here.
Collaborative centres & Research infrastructures

SLU Fältforsk

SLU Fältforsk is a joint body between the SLU and external stakeholders in the agricultural sector. SLU Fältforsk's main tasks are to coordinate the planning of national field research and the processing of results, as well as to ensure the quality of methods and techniques used both in the field and in laboratories.

The Agricultural Field Research Program

The Agricultural Field Research Program coordinates, develops, and provides access to agricultural field research infrastructure and expertise to enable high-quality research and education with a strong societal impact. It is led by Program Director Sabina Braun.
