Growth facilities at the Faculty of Forest Sciences in Umeå

The Faculty of Forest Sciences operates several climate chambers in the main building in Umeå, as well as the Wallenberg greenhouse, which is located adjacent to the Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC).

The Growth facility at the Faculty of Forest Sciences enables the cultivation of non-transgenic plants as well as transgenic plants, provided that they do not flower during the booked period, in controlled environments. The facility is frequently used for growing tree species such as aspen and spruce, but also other plant species may be cultivated there.

The facility is available for booking by researchers and staff at both UPSC and SLU, and to some extent also by external growers (subject to availability).

In total, there are six climate chambers operated by SLU in Umeå. These allow control over factors such as light intensity, day length and to a certain degree, humidity and temperature. The Wallenberg greenhouse contains eleven growth rooms, which offer slightly less control than the climate chambers, particularly with regard to temperature regulation. There is also a potting area and a small lab available in connection with the Wallenberg greenhouse.
