Doctoral (PhD) studies

Approximately 70 per cent of SLU’s turnover goes towards research and doctoral studies. The research-intensive nature of SLU means there are great opportunities for pursuing a doctoral programme. SLU awards around 100 doctorates each year, and there are approximately 550 active doctoral students.

What are doctoral studies?

Studies at doctoral level can lead towards a doctoral (PhD) degree or a licentiate degree. Those enrolled in doctoral studies are referred to as doctoral students. The programmes include courses and other learning activities, but the majority of a programme is dedicated to research at a department.

What are the requirements to become a doctoral student?

SLU regularly advertises new doctoral positions. Around 100 new doctoral students are admitted each year. To be eligible for admission, you must meet certain entry requirements.

The PhD Handbook

The Swedish National Union of Students (SFS) has published a PhD Handbook, which contains comprehensive information about doctoral studies and what being a doctoral student at a Swedish university involves.
