Call for applications for funding to organize PhD courses and other activities

Page reviewed:  06/10/2026

Here is information about the current calls for funding of subject courses, please note that there are two calls – one from the Research School Spira and one from The SLU and Sparbanken Skåne Centre for Sustainable Primary Production (PrimCen).

Fun-LTV and The SLU and Sparbanken Skåne Centre for Sustainable Primary Production announces funding to organize PhD courses and other activities in the research education

The research schools at SLU shall carry out education activities which support the doctoral students in achieving the degree outcomes. The education activities may be PhD courses with an approved course syllabus, seminars, workshops, conferences, study visits etc and shall be open for all doctoral students at SLU independent of department or faculty affiliation. Note that PhD students are asking for shorter courses (maximum one week).

FUN and The SLU and Sparbanken Skåne Centre for Sustainable Primary Production (PrimCen) now urge researchers/supervisors at the departments to submit applications for funding of activities during July 2027 – Dec 2028.

Applications are asked to specify if the application is for financing from FUN or from PrimCen (or both). Funding from FUN is allocated based on the significance of the activity for the quality and the development of the research education at the faculty. Funding from PrimCen is allocated based on specific criteria (link).

If you apply for a PhD course, the application must include the form Application of funding for PhD course and a complete course syllabus. If you apply for other PhD activities, please attach a description clearly stating purpose, learning outcomes and content of the activity.

For approved financing of a PhD course, the course coordinator must confirm the course start date with Spira's coordinator Åsa Lankinen before the course is advertised. If a granted activity is cancelled, the entire funding will be withdrawn.

Submit applications to forskarutbildning-ltv@slu.se by November 18.

In December, FUN and PrimCen will decide which applications will be funded.

Fun-LTV criteria for financing of PhD subject courses and activities

  • PhD courses should have a course syllabus with clear learning goals and motivation for number of course credits. 1.5 credits correspond to 40 hours.
  • Activities that do not require a course syllabus should clearly state the learning goals for PhD students.
  • Courses or activities should be for a minimum of 5 PhD students admitted at SLU. Exceptions can be made when PhD-students take part in master courses. In such cases, Fun-LTV could cover extra costs associated with the attendance of PhD students. Those courses also require a course syllabus for the PhD students.
  • Fun-LTV accepts costs for teaching hours (following Alnarpstaxan), rent of teaching facilities, excursions, travels and housing for external teachers and other costs necessary for conducting the course and reaching the learning goals.
  • Fun-LTV does not finance salaries for SLU faculty professors (following the recommendation from the SLU Board.)
  • Fun-LTV does not finance food or social activities for students or teachers.
  • For external teachers, a standard allowance is allowed.
  • The maximum grant for one course is 200 000 SEK. (In exceptional cases, up to 250 000 SEK can be granted, if there is enough funding.)
  • In the case the budget of Fun-LTV does not allow funding of all courses and activities, courses and activities should be given a priority (1, 2, or 3) following discussions in Fun-LTV, where 1 has the highest priority and 3 the lowest.
Factors to consider for priorities of courses and activities
  • Fun-LTV should support a variety of courses/subject areas, matching the needs of PhD students at the faculty.
  • Courses and activities should be of high quality.
  • Courses that have received Fun-LTV funding the previous year (or are similar to such courses) and have not attracted a large number of SLU PhD students, should receive a lower priority and could be recommended to apply for funding the coming year.
  • Master courses that apply for attendance of PhD students could be co-founded rather than fully funded, as these courses already have funding from undergraduate education. A suggestion is to follow FUR guidelines for the funded amount and set a maximum level per course. The funding will be given per SLU PhD-student. The maximum level per course will be 100 000 SEK.
  • Courses with lower priority may be co-funded and in those cases asked to provide an updated application that fits the recommended budget.

Evald Doctoral Courses is a SLU university common system for evaluations of doctoral student courses.

You will find more information about Evald Doctoral Courses on this link.

When the course is completed, a course report is sent to Fun, containing:

  • a list of registered and approved students and their home university,
  • course scheme,
  • financial reporting according to SLU's full cost calculation,
  • summary of the course evaluation, and if applicable
  • note on possible cooperation with another department within SLU or another university.

The report must be sent to forskarutbildning-ltv@slu.se within 3 months after the course is completed.

The course report is discussed at the next Fun meeting. After approval, the financial report is passed to FUR in the case of basic courses and to LTV's financial support in the case of subject courses belonging to the research school. The money will soon after be paid to the department.

Registration in Ladok of participating students.

  • A list of participants are sent to forskarutbildning-ltv@slu.se after passed deadline.
  • The list must include name and social security number or for those students that are not admitted to SLU or has got a Swedish social security number: name, date of birth (year-month-date) and gender.

Reporting of approved students
