Our courses
The WIFORCE Research School offers specialised PhD-level courses that combine ecological theory with practical insights. Learn from leading researchers and explore the future of sustainable forest use and conservation – both in the classroom and out in the field.
The Research School currently offers two main courses designed to deepen PhD students’ understanding of forest ecosystems and the challenges involved in sustainable forest use and conservation.
Ecology and Sustainable Management of Forest Ecosystems
This two-week course provides an introduction to the historical development of forest management in Sweden, key ecological theories, and how these relate to current research topics. Students gain insight into how land-use history, scientific advances, and societal needs shape forest ecosystem ecology and management.
While focusing on the boreal forest, the course includes examples from other biomes. The programme highlights how research addresses critical questions facing sustainable forest management today.
Offered in May 2026, 2028, 2029, and 2030. More information to come.
Excursion-Based Course: Forest Use and Conservation in Practice
Starting spring 2026, this course combines two-day excursions with lectures and preparatory study. Held twice annually over several years, it offers practical experiences of various aspects of sustainable forest use and conservation.
Students visit diverse sites and engage with experts and stakeholders from the forest sector.
More information to come.
Beyond the courses
In addition to the core courses, the Research School provides many opportunities to network and broaden your knowledge. These include study visits, workshops, and other events that focus on sustainable forest use and conservation.
