Would you like to develop your scientific expertise in the areas of quantitative, population and molecular genetics related to animal breeding and biodiversity while studying at two leading European universities in these subjects? Then this is the right programme for you.
European Master in Animal Biodiversity and Genomics
MSC IN BIOINFORMATICS- Cutting-edge questions of genetic research
- International degree
- Good career opportunities in industry and academia
Programme information
The domain of animal breeding and genetics has undergone a revolution in the recent decade. The availability of high throughput genomic markers as well as phenotypic data from automated recording systems resulted in dramatic change in the understanding of genetic mechanisms and in the way livestock and aquaculture species are bred. The European Master in Animal Biodiversity and Genomics (EMABG) responds to a grown demand of industry and academia for people who are highly skilled in reflecting and dealing with this kind of data.
The EMABG is a two-year degree that provides students with a thorough scientific expertise in the areas of quantitative, population and molecular genetics related to animal breeding and biodiversity as well as the possibilities of an extensive international network, and good career opportunities. The programme is held in collaboration between SLU and five other renowned European universities. As a student in this programme, you will spend your first year in Norway at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) universities and second year at another partner university depending on your chosen specialisation.
The five different specialisations to choose from are; Conservation genomics for rare and endangered breeds and species; Designing and implementing breeding programmes for small populations; Bioinformatics applied to biodiversity and genomics; One health: Health and welfare in humans and animals; and Understanding biodiversity: integrative biology. These specialisations provide students with knowledge and skills for successfully targeting the cutting-edge questions of genetic research.
SLU offers a specialisation in bioinformatics applied to biodiversity and genomics.

Content
EMABG is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master programme co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union. It is a two-year programme with interdisciplinary and advanced theoretical and applied courses in quantitative, population and molecular genetics related to animal breeding and biodiversity.
The EMABG programme is organised by six European partner universities: AgroParisTech, SLU, the University of Göttingen, the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU), the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), and Wageningen University. These universities are internationally renowned for their scientific achievements and quality of their programmes. Students will study at two of the partner universities. The first year of studies is conducted at NMBU.

In the final semester, students will connect theory and methodology with practice by developing a problem-solving project, which they will use as the basis of their Master’s thesis.

Career
Graduates of this European Master’s programme have the qualifications necessary for successfully targeting the cutting-edge questions of genetic research as young scientists. These young scientists graduate as specialised experts with a broad, interdisciplinary and international background. Graduates with those properties will become the elite experts and scientists of tomorrow who will make good use of their network with their EMABG universities.
Many former EMAGB students work with research and development in the public and private sectors. It is also common that graduates of the EMABG programme continue onto doctoral studies.
Studying abroad provides students with the opportunity to develop their intercultural skills, build professional networks and increase their knowledge of environmental science.
