Meet our students

Curious about what students think of this master’s programme? Sora shares her experiences at SLU in this interview.

Why did you choose to study at SLU?

The programme contents seemed interesting, and I thought they would help me fill my knowledge gap in plant physiology. Since I was interested in the symbiosis between plants and microbes, I wanted to attend a course that focused on this topic.

What makes your study programme unique?

I’m not sure about the coming years, but during the first year of my master’s, half of the students in my class were from the Erasmus Mundus programme. They were bright and motivated, which encouraged me to study harder. It’s also great that, in addition to lecture-based courses, we can take a practical course - meaning an internship - which is a really nice option.

What’s the best part of student life at SLU? And what has surprised you the most?

There are always events to participate in - some not related to studies and some open to people beyond the student community. This gives you opportunities to meet people outside your usual circle. I really liked the Language Café, Innovation Lunch, and Breakfast Club. The Language Café was a lovely place to talk with people interested in culture and languages. The Innovation Lunch was for those who are ambitious and eager to try new ideas. The Breakfast Club was a great place to listen to research outside my field and talk with senior researchers, which gave me ideas for the future. And of course - fika is everywhere! Not only at events, even my programme director offered fika at the end of each term.

What advice would you give to students considering studying in Sweden?

Save your money and make sure you have enough - or more - especially if you’re a tuition-fee-paying student. Changes in currency exchange rates can affect your finances, and Sweden has a high cost of living. Take every opportunity that interests you - you’ll make great friends and memories - but don’t push yourself too hard if you feel tired, uncomfortable, or depressed. In that case, take a rest, eat what you like, do what you enjoy, and sleep.
