Mål
The purpose of the course is to give the students insight in the complexity in forest regenerations of the modern forestry in Scandinavia. New findings and insights in seedling types, planting techniques, soil scarification methods will be discussed and evaluated linked to an understanding of plant ecophysiology and soil and site factors. The purpose with the course is also to provide knowledge in design of regeneration experiments and the techniques in measurements of seedling vitality and growth. The chain of managements, from seed to established trees will also be part of the discussion.
After the course the student should be able to;
Describe and analyse regeneration methods used in contemporary forests in Scandinavia.
Analyse different regeneration methods, from a perspective of forestry as part of a sustainable development.
Measure and evaluate the establishment of planted tree seedlings
Design a forest regeneration experiment and analyse and evaluate the results
Innehåll
The course will be held as partly a distance course on 50 % study time, scheduled on the summer semester. Most of the course is taught and examined by distance learning but one full week is mandatory excursions. Students will be encouraged to submit their written assignments in English but could be accepted in Swedish. The field week will be held in Swedish if all students are fluent in the language, otherwise in English. The course includes two individual assignments, one based on literature studies that will be submitted prior to the field week and one fieldwork project that should be presented at the field week. The fieldwork project is launched already in the first weeks, where the student will measure and follow survival and vitality of newly planted seedlings from June-August. List of the available projects will be provided during the first meeting.
Examinationsformer
For passing the course the student must submit required written assignment in literature studies, conduct a field work project, participate in group activities through canvas and attend to the mandatory field week.
