Mål

After completion of the course the PhD-student or veterinary resident shall be able to: • present their own research project in a pedagogic and scientifically sound way, to a scientific audience as well as a to broader general audience • actively discuss background, study design and methodology of relevance for the presented project • identify weaknesses and strengths of presented research projects • moderate scientific seminars

Innehåll

The course has a dual format. One part is to actively participate in two workshops (4 hours per workshop) dealing with both oral and poster presentation techniques and the practical construction of a poster. Another part is to actively participate in >20 seminars given in the course seminar series. The seminar series will have weekly seminars during the spring and autumn semesters.

The workshops, will be arranged together with the pedagogic unit at SLU and aims to train the students in both oral and poster presentation techniques for dissemination of their research to different receivers – for example to researchers and to a public audience.

The seminar series is open to all personnel interested, e.g. junior and senior researchers, post-doctoral students, master students and personnel involved in the field of veterinary medicine and animal sciences. At the seminars PhD students/veterinary residents or researchers will in 25 – 30 minutes present on-going research projects. Course participants will also serve as moderator of the seminars introducing the speaker and moderating the following discussion (focused on questions from the audience to the presenting student). The student presenting will also receive scientific and pedagogic feedback on the presentation from other course participants (takes place in a separate closed meeting). In addition, Professors/Researchers from other universities will also be invited to present their latest scientific achievements.

* Active participation in two of the specific workshops arranged in the course, one on oral presentation and one on poster presentation, which will give training and unique practice in scientific presentation techniques * Moderating one of the seminars * Giving feedback on two other course participants presentations * Performing two oral presentations followed by an open discussion with course participants and other attending staff * Attendance to at least 20 seminars including the two presentations

Övrig information

The course will run during three years and during this three-year period approximately 90 seminars will be held. The student can select which seminars to attend. Exact dates and times of the seminars will be announced at latest two days in advance. In addition, one to two workshops will be given per semester. For seminars participation via video-link is possible, but participation in the workshops and when serving as Moderator will require physical presence.
