Synchrotron X-ray methods are of increasing importance in environmental science and nowadays they are part of many researchers’ toolbox. There are many different X-ray methods; on this course we will focus mainly on microfocus imaging techniques (µ-XRF, STXM) and on X-ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS, XANES). The course will address the following questions:
- What are synchrotrons and what can you do at them?
- How do you access a synchrotron (e.g. applying for beamtime)?
- What is the basic theory behind microfocus techniques and X-ray absorption spectroscopy?
- How are samples prepared and run?
- How are the results treated and interpreted?
- How to present the results from a synchrotron X-ray experiment in a scientific publication?

Mål
On completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- describe what different X-ray techniques that are being used at synchrotrons, and how they can be accessed.
- understand some of the basic physical theory behind microfocus imaging techniques and X-ray absorption spectroscopy.
- select an appropriate method for preparing samples for a given X-ray technique at a synchrotron.
- describe the main procedures of data treatment of results from microfocus imaging techniques and X-ray absorption spectroscopy.
- select appropriate ways to present the results from a synchrotron experiment in a report or peer-reviewed publication
- provide an overview of how a selected X-ray technique has been applied in the student’s own research area, and
- clearly and concisely communicate results and conclusions.
Innehåll
The course consists of the following parts:
- Introductory lectures when synchrotron methods are presented. Topics include: Methods used at synchrotrons worldwide, procedures for access, theory and background to X-ray fluorescence, scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM), X-ray absorption spectroscopy, sample preparation and sample handling aspects, basic principles for data treatment.
- A mandatory one-day workshop at MAX IV in Lund, which includes: study visit to beamlines, presentation of the techniques by synchrotron staff, demonstration of how to collect data for a sample
- A number of campus-based exercises (mandatory) with: data treatment and interpretation techniques using some of the most common software codes (Sams X-rays, the Demeter suite). Seminar on how results are presented in a scientific publication.
- Individual assignment (mandatory) to produce a brief literature study on how a certain X-ray method has been applied in the PhD student’s own research area.
Sustainable development and equality aspects are considered during the course. The course is given in collaboration with MAX IV and includes international guest lecturers.
