Jag är professor emeritus vid Institutionen för ekologi, SLU, sedan 2017. Min forskning är tillämpad och inriktad mot biologisk mångfald och naturvård i skogen. Jag är intresserad av processer och strukturer som styr arters förekomst och dynamik i naturliga och brukade skogar och hur detta kan användas för att utforma naturvårdsstrategier. En stark drivkraft i min forskning är koppling till dagsaktuella och viktiga skogs- och naturvårdspolitiska frågor, inklusive de frågor som är särskilt viktiga för praktikerna. Jag är växtekolog och använder ofta  mossor och lavar som studieorganismer.

Forskning

En huvudinriktning på min forskning för närvarande är nyckelbiotoper (skogsområden med stor betydelse för växter och djur) där jag studerar hur landskapet påverkar nyckelbiotopernas värde för den biologiska mångfalden 

Min forskning de senaste åren har annars varit inriktad mot naturhänsyn i skogsbruket, dvs. naturvårdsåtgärden att lämna träd och trädgrupper vid avverkning för att gynna den biologiska mångfalden.

Ett stort intresse är också den stora skogsbranden i Västmanland (14 000 ha brann år 2014) där jag kommer att följa vegetationsutvecklingen under minst 10 år.

Samverkan

Samverkan och forskningskommunikation är ett stort intresse. Jag har under senare år gjort flera stora kunskapssammanställningar riktade till skogsbruket och naturvården. För närvarande deltar jag också i två filmprojekt, ett om naturhänsyn vid avverkning, ett om nyckelbiotoper.
